STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to get your domain

A domain is the name of your website on the internet, for example mybakery.com. It works like a home address: people type it to find you.

You do not buy a domain forever. You pay for one year and then renew it every year. If you do not renew it, you lose it and someone else can take it.

Which of the three sites is right for you

NIC Argentina ≈ 15 min

Domains it gives
.com.ar .ar and other Argentine endings
Who it is for
People or companies with an Argentine CUIT or CUIL number
What it asks for
A Clave Fiscal (tax password) from ARCA, formerly AFIP

GoDaddy ≈ 10 min

Domains it gives
.com .net .org and many more
Who it is for
Anyone, in any country
What it asks for
An email address and a card

Registro.br ≈ 15 min

Domains it gives
.com.br and other Brazilian endings
Who it is for
People or companies with a Brazilian CPF or CNPJ number
What it asks for
A CPF or CNPJ and an email address

GoDaddy is just an example. Other sites also sell .com domains, such as Namecheap, Hostinger, or DonWeb. If you already have an account with one of them, you can register your domain there: the steps are similar. What matters is that the domain is in your name.

What to have ready

  • An email address you check every day. Notices are sent there.
  • A way to pay: a credit or debit card.
  • Two or three name ideas, in case your first choice is taken.

Tips for choosing the name

  • Short and easy to say out loud.
  • No hyphens, no numbers and no special letters such as ñ or accents.
  • Close to the name of your business or project.

NIC Argentina · .com.ar .ar

≈ 15 min

NIC Argentina is the Argentine government office that gives out the country’s domains. Everything is done online and takes about 15 minutes. The website is in Spanish, so the button names below are written in Spanish.

What you need

  • Your CUIT or CUIL number.
  • Your Clave Fiscal from ARCA (formerly AFIP), level 2 or higher. It is the same password you use on the ARCA website. If you do not have one, you must get it from ARCA first.
  • A credit card, or a way to pay through PagoMisCuentas or Rapipago.

After you pay

  • With a credit card or PagoMisCuentas, the payment is processed within 24 hours. With Rapipago it can take up to 72 business hours.
  • Once the payment is processed, the domain is yours for one year.
  • The price changes from time to time. The site shows the exact price before you pay.
  • Write down the expiry date. You must renew every year on the same site.

GoDaddy · .com .net .org

≈ 10 min

GoDaddy is a company that sells domains to people in any country. It does not ask for documents: an email address and a card are enough. Buying takes about 10 minutes. We use it as an example: if you prefer another site, the steps are similar.

What you need

  • An email address.
  • A credit or debit card that works for online purchases.

After you buy

  • The domain is active within a few minutes.
  • Look at the renewal price. The first year is often cheap and the following years cost more.
  • Automatic renewal is turned on: GoDaddy charges your card every year. If you do not want that, you can turn it off in your account.

Registro.br · .com.br

≈ 15 min

Registro.br is the official office that gives out Brazil’s domains. The website is in Portuguese, so the button names below are written in Portuguese. It takes about 15 minutes.

What you need

  • A Brazilian CPF (person) or CNPJ (company) number. Without one of these two numbers you cannot register a .br domain.
  • An email address.
  • A way to pay: Pix, credit card or boleto (a Brazilian payment slip).

Steps

Tick each step as you go.

After you pay

  • The domain is active a few minutes after the payment is confirmed. With boleto it can take longer.
  • The price is about R$ 40 per year. The site shows the exact price before you pay.
  • Write down the expiry date and renew before that date.
